How do you feel when you see a huge, beautifully maintained church in the middle of a slum neighbourhood?

I grew up around such a church. People poured a great deal of love into the hand-crafted altarpieces and more. Some people outside of the church would gripe about the church having nice art and other things (the vast majority of which was provided by the parishioners themselves), but failed to notice how much money was being funneled right back into the community in the form of free food, free medicine, free funerals, aid for immigrants, and utility payments for seniors. The church functioned as a community center. It's easy to judge, but the people themselves made the church a beautiful place. It's not as if the church were magically dropped into the community from the sky. Some people would deem it a waste, but for them, it wasn't. The many hours they spent carving, painting and building were profitable to them. Some people will say that such things are a waste of time and talent, but it was their choice. It probably does say less about the church itself than about the community in question (and the people, rather than the edifice, are what really make up a church). Some people choose to make their churches into artistic havens despite their financial circumstances.
